Thoughts (and Video) from a Day on the Lake
Posted by: J. Michael Moore at 10:07AM EST on June 12, 2008
Yesterday more than a dozen Falcons players went fishing with combat-wounded veterans from around the Southeast.

These Purple Heart recipients spent close to three hours on Lake Lanier fishing for striper with Falcons stars.

Many Falcons players grew up with a fishing pole in their hand, including starting center Todd McClure. But Wednesday marked something different -- from fishing for the elusive striper to spending time with honored guardians of the country.

"We talked football and they talked about Iraq and what they went through," McClure said. "It's humbling to hear how close to death they were at times. You may watch TV and hear about the war but you don't get to hear the stories up close about what these guys went through. It's very humbling."

Falcons community staffers Chris Millman and Colt Berry organized the event. The Dam Store provided bait, tackle and other supplies and the fishermen were greeted at the end of the day with steaks from Outback Steakhouse. Members of the Lanier Striper Club volunteered their boats, time, skills and fuel for the event.

Staff Sgt. Calvin Wilson, an M1A1 tank commander, was inured by a roadside bomb just more than a year ago outside Ramadi.

He entered the Army after high school but said he always wanted to take a shot at the NFL.

"I met my dream today," he said. "To me, it feels like I'm in the NFL for a day."

MORE FROM THE LAKE

Look for more coverage today on AtlantaFalcons.com, but here's a little something to back the fish tales that are currently being told in the locker room. (Click here for photos).

Tackle Tyson Clabo brings in a fish near Flat Creek.
Not every boat had a scale, but Clabo and McClure claim the right tackle led the way with a 13-pounder.

McClure gets in on the action.
Don't worry folks, no one fell off the boat and that loud clank you hear didn't cause any visible damage.

Wilson gets a souvenir.
Fishing with Tim Anderson, Doug Datish and Kevin Lovell, Calvin Wilson also got plenty of pictures to remember his "dream" day.

Redman takes two. He may have brought in more, but this is the second fish I witnessed the Falcons quarterback catch.

Gotta Love Technology
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 2:20PM EST on December 23, 2007
Through the miracle of modern technology I sit now in one of the most interesting -- and beautiful -- stadiums in the world.

Also through the miracle of modern technology, I can give you a peak at this retractable-roof, sliding-field phenomenon the Falcons will be a part of today in Glendale, Ariz. (click on the image for video).

This really is a remarkable stadium. They'll be opening the roof soon and that should shed a little light on this game between two playoff-less teams.

I have to say, this stadium has gotten cooler since the last time I was here.

Most of that is due to the area around it. We stayed close by and enjoyed a Phoenix Coyotes game at Jobing.com arena last night (special thanks to Don Schwartz of the Coyotes, a friend and former coworker).

And yes, thanks to modern technology, I can show you video from the Coyote's 2-1 shootout loss to Vancouver.

But, enough of that. I know you come here for game action, so here's the inactive list -- straight off the pen.

QB Byron Leftwich (third quarterback)
CB Antoine Harris
OL Pat McCoy
OL D'Anthony Batiste
OL Havey Dahl
TE Courtney Anderson
WR Joe Horn
DT Tim Anderson

Justin Blalock will start at left guard. Laurent Robinson will start in place of Joe Horn.

More to come from this beautiful facility that cost more than $395 million to build.

Yup. You've gotta love technology.

Coleman, Lewis to IR
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 2:49PM EST on November 20, 2007

Defensive tackle Rod Coleman joked at the beginning of the season that he was so unique, all of his injuries defy common medical logic (see ruptured quadricep).

Coleman will need his humor more than ever now as he and fellow defensive tackle Trey Lewis were placed on the Falcons injured reserve list Tuesday morning.

Coleman left Sunday's game against the Bucs with an arm injury but returned for limited action. Lewis injured his knee early in the game and did not return.

Let me tell you, neither looked pretty.

Head Coach Bobby Petrino didn't have details of the injury after the game, but Lewis' left the field in obvious pain.

He did have more information Tuesday afternoon.

"Trey has a knee (injury) and he’ll require surgery," Petrino said. "Rod gave us a great effort -- you can’t say enough about Rod. Here’s a guy that came out, practiced hard, gave great effort in every game that he played in. He’s just at a point now where he needs to take the time off to make sure he doesn’t injure anything else."

Coleman totaled eight tackles, including a two-sack performance and a forced fumble against the Carolina Panthers in Week 10.

Lewis made his first career start against Houston in Week 4 and posted 23 tackles, one interception and one pass defensed in nine games.

The news hits hard on a unit already battling injuries. Montavious Stanley and Jonathan Babineaux remain as the only defensive tackles with extended experience. R

Recently signed Tim Anderson has been inactive for the past two games.

To help fill the void the team signed defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona -- a sixth round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2006 -- and promoted defensive end Kevin Huntley from the practice squad to the active roster.

Petrino said Stanley and Babineaux will start Thursday night against the Colts with Anderson in a backup role. Stanley has played both nose tackle and "under" tackle in his time with the Falcons.
