Harrington Returns to Falcons
Posted by: J. Michael Moore at 2:24PM EST on March 13, 2008

A week after he was released, quarterback Joey Harrington re-signed with the Falcons Wednesday.

Various news reports indicated a re-structured contract and salary cap relief with the return, though terms of the deal were not disclosed.

It was business as usual for Harrington Thursday morning, however, as he appeared on the Zak Tyler Morning Show on 92.9 Dave FM (Atlanta Falcons Radio).

Harrington acknowledged his release-and-return was a bit odd, but he's happy to be a part of the Falcons again.

He said for the first time in his career he feels like he "belongs with a team."

"It was an interesting way the team went about it," he said on the show. "Obviously we have a lot of improving to do. With the cuts that we made and the moves we're possibly looking to make in the Draft we need to have some room to sign some players. We're in a bit of a pinch salary cap wise and told them: "Look, I'm ready to do whatever it takes to make this team better...

"I love these guys in the locker room and I love these fans in Atlanta. I think it's a very well-run group and I want to stay here as long as I possibly can."

A Look Back at the "Third Quarter"
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 4:39PM EST on January 16, 2008
It was in a Charlotte, N.C. hotel lobby that I had the pleasure of meeting "Momma Crump."

An incredibly kind and genuine woman, she listened with great interest as I and others in our group of dinner hunters explained what we do for the Falcons.

It was almost in passing that she revealed her son was Alge Crumpler, the Falcons Pro Bowl tight end that would play quite the role in his team's victory less than 24 hours later.

The next day in his home state Crumpler caught a game-winning touchdown against the home-standing Panthers. It marked the second-straight victory for the 2007 Falcons.

I'm sure that catch and run made Momma Crump celebrate up in the stands with the rest of Crumpler's family members that put aside their loyalty to Carolina blue for just one day.

Crumpler's big play and family reception after the game was a nice reminder of how personal this game is to every player on the field.

It also made me remember just how good victory -- especially the last-second variety -- feels.

In many ways, a game like that in Carolina was just what the Falcons needed. Never underestimate the power of a winning streak and, in the NFL, never underestimate the importance of division wins.

You may recall the Falcons went into the week after the Panthers' win with a chance to pick up a huge chunk of ground in the NFC South.

Atlanta finished the season 4-12 and out of the playoff picture but, for a moment against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Falcons had a shot to get right back into the postseason race.

It started in Carolina.

It was a special time in 2007 that hasn't received enough credit. Crumpler's TD and Joey Harrington's poise to stay in the pocket and deliver the ball (in spite of a bone-shattering hit) were glimpses of the fight that remained in the Falcons until the end.

I would encourage fans to remember the moments like this from last season as the team looks to build for the future.

It sure made me -- and Momma Crump -- proud.

A Look Back at the "First Quarter"
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 2:49PM EST on January 8, 2008
The first four games of 2007 acted as a learning experience for Falcons players, coaches and staff.

How would Bobby Petrino's new offense interact with teams playing starters for four quarters and playing with more intense, non-preseason play books?

How would the Falcons defense do under new coordinator Mike Zimmer and how good can John Abraham really be when he's healthy through the first part of a season?

How would the team deal with two straight road trips to open a season?

It didn't take long to get some answers.

Defense? Solid. Abraham? Hard-hitting, exciting and -- at times -- dominant. Travel? Well, two straight losses.

An NFL season is too long to make snap judgments but, in hindsight, a 1-3 start with some rough outings could have been telling of what was to come in terms of wins and losses in 2007.

No one can disagree with the charge the team put together in December, however, which included a season-ending win after the abrupt resignation by Bobby Petrino as head coach.

None of that could be predicted in the first four games, which included bad days on offense (Minnesota and Jacksonville) and two solid days at quarterback by Joey Harrington in a seven-point loss (Carolina) and the season's first win (Houston).

You can click here for more on each game as I break down the season over on AF.com.

What we learned from the first four games is that the Falcons would be able to throw the football in 2007.

Roddy White started off what would be a record-breaking season and Harrington, though he wouldn't finish the season as the starter, had two of the best games in his career.

It gets lost over time, but the Falcons win over the Texans was one of the better all-around performances of the season. The team came back from a deficit, took the lead and held it as Houston and former Falcons backup quarterback Matt Schaub tried to chip away.

If you were at the Georgia Dome that day you got flashbacks to winning times.

An examination of the stats through the first four games of the season shows just how close the Falcons were to picking up one, two or even three more wins.

The Carolina and Jacksonville games were lost by a combined 13 points with two missed field goals spelling the difference against the Jaguars.

Two Minnesota touchdowns came on defense.

Atlanta also ranked in the top 15 in passing yards per game, opponents passing yards per game and opponents points per game through the first four games.

Turnover differential was perhaps the most discouraging number (minus-1), but even that stat turned as the season went on and the Falcons finished as one of the best teams in the NFC in that category.

I could go on forever analyzing stats from four months ago, so I'll just leave you with an AF.com highlight film from the first win of 2007.

Enjoy and feel free to comment with your memories from 2007.

Is That a Ship in the Stadium?
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 10:52AM EST on December 16, 2007
I'm a newbie when it comes to Raymond James Stadium so -- for a few minutes this morning -- I took off my Falcons hat and threw on the tourist get up (sans fanny pack).

I must admit the end zone decoration is pretty cool. They only "fire them cannons" when the Bucs score. So, hopefully, I don't get to hear anything beyond the test blast that just rattled the windows in the press box.

Speaking of the press box...

I should say there is quite a bit of space up here -- much more then some press boxes around the league that make me feel like I'm sitting in the back seat of my wife's old 1981 Dodge Omni.

All-in-all I have quite a good perch to watch the Birds today.

And what a game it should be.

I haven't been this excited for a game since the season opener. You get the feeling -- at the very least -- the Falcons are going to dish out some big hits today and play with passion for interim head coach Emmitt Thomas.

Throw in a little anger regarding Bobby Petrino's abrupt resignation...

I'm reminded of this.

It's not the greatest football movie. But, it seems appropriate since Joey Harrington kind of looks like Shane Falco.

Musings: Learning from a Loss
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 8:54PM EST on December 3, 2007
Random Monday Musings while sitting in the waiting area at Kauffman Tire...

I started this post around 8 a.m. while waiting on a new tire for the car. As a perfect example that we at the Falcons do have lives outside of football, I was at the shop first thing this morning (you get regular chores in when you can when you work in the midst of the busy NFL season).

I can't say it was easy to get up this morning. It never is easy to sleep, much less rise, after a loss.

That being said, the Falcons 28-16 defeat at St. Louis yesterday was easier to swallow when I thought about some big plays and key performances. I hope fans feel the same way even though, on paper, the Rams presented an opportunity for a fourth win.

That wasn't in the cards at the Edward Jones Dome.

What was dealt on the field, however, was showcase performances by several players -- young and veteran.

I gave you a heavy dose of this in my game recap, so I'll just hit the highlights.

Roddy White has a new career high in receiving yards (146), Jerious Norwood jacked up his yards-per-carry average (96 yards yesterday on just eight carries) and Michael Jenkins has a third touchdown reception on the season.

Then there's quarterback Chris Redman, who got his most extensive action in an NFL game since 2002. In one quarter of work, Redman notched two touchdowns and came a shoelace away from completing a miraculous comeback charge.

Redman was thankful for the opportunity.

"It feels good to be able to get back out there," Redman said. "It has been a long time since I was in the game atmosphere.  I had to get some of the rust off, I guess.  Unfortunately, we came up a bit short today."

Petrino was asked today if Redman would take over as starter and said he wanted to talk to players Tuesday before making a decision.

The Falcons proved they haven't come up short at various skill positions.

It's human nature to point toward the negative aspects of a loss. There were plenty of positives in this one, though, even with the Falcons falling to 3-9 on the season.

Two division games remain in the regular season, which present chances to spoil the season for two big rivals. The team also has an extra day to prepare for a Monday Night Football match with the Saints next week.

Feel free to leave your comments on what pleased you in the Falcons loss.
LIVE: Petrino Monday Presser, Week 13
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 12:11PM EST on December 3, 2007
11:54 AM EST:  We're all set up and ready to go.

12:00 PM EST: Time to get this puppy on the road.

12:03 PM EST: Here we go.

12:04 PM EST: Head Coach Bobby Petrino said he has not made a decision on the team's quarterback moving forward (Chris Redman came in for Joey Harrington in the fourth quarter and led a late rally in Sunday's 28-16 loss to St. Louis).

12:05 PM EST: Petrino said the offensive performance under Redman was "impressive" and credits Jerious Norwood as another spark in a 13-point, fourth-quarter run.

12:06 PM EST: The coach says the team "has to get (Norwood) more touches one way or another" to get more punch on the field.

12:07 PM EST: The coach is talking about stability in the face of injury and again cites Green Bay as a team that made a run at the end of last season that now has a healthy group on the field and is having success in the second year of new offensive and defensive systems.

12:08 PM EST: D'Anthony Batiste did well in his pass protection, according to Petrino. Batiste started a second straight game at guard in place of Kynan Forney.

12:09 PM EST: The coach said he "doesn't know" about getting more rookies involved on defense including David Irons and Stephen Nicholas. He said the team is doing everything possible to win the game Monday night and he's pleased with their contributions on special teams.

12:09 PM EST: "Chris is very sound technically," the coach says of Redman, a former Louisville quarterback. He said coaches have remarked about how "hot" Redman has been at practice and that he did a nice job of anticipating the pass rush Sunday.

12:11 PM EST: That's it. Just a shade under 10 minutes.

Harrington to Start Against Colts
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 2:50PM EST on November 20, 2007
This Thanksgiving, the Falcons will start a quarterback with plenty of experience on Turkey Day.

Joey Harrington, who spent the first four years of his career with the Thanksgiving mainstay Detroit Lions, is set to play in a sixth straight holiday game.

The Falcons host the Indianapolis Colts Thursday night in the Thanksgiving nightcap.

Harrington replaced Byron Leftwich in Sunday's 31-7 loss to Tampa Bay. He'll play Thursday night because of a late injury to Leftwich, according to Head Coach Bobby Petrino.

"Byron couldn’t practice today," Petrino said Tuesday afternoon. "Joey will start the game and Byron has to see if he can get ready to be the backup. Obviously he’ll be out here tomorrow trying to do that."

Petrino said Leftwich injured his tail bone against the Bucs and required X-rays Monday morning. There's a chance he could get back on the field Wednesday but, with the short week, the coach didn't sound optimistic.

Harrington said he'll keep his normal focus in preparation.

"I’m just going to go play ball (and) go do what this team is asking me to do," Harrington said. "If they want me to be the starter, I’ll be there starter. If they want me to be the backup, I’ll be the backup. It doesn’t change how I go about getting ready for this game and I’m going to be ready to play for this team."

Harrington was 16-of-20 passing for 139 yards and a late touchdown against the Buccaneers.

Falcons Yet to Decide on Quarterback
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 12:39PM EST on November 16, 2007
Well, it's Friday and Head Coach Bobby Petrino made an unscheduled stop with the media coming off the field.

No news though on who will start at quarterback Sunday when Atlanta hosts Tampa Bay.

Byron Leftwich and Joey Harrington both practiced with Leftwich making more progress from ankle surgery that sidelined him for the past two games.

"I thought they both looked good," Petrino said. "Byron was moving around (and) had no ill effects from practice the last two days so that was good to see."

Petrino said the decision to start Leftwich or Harrington will not be a game-time decision but fans will have to wait until Sunday to see who steps under center.

In other injury news, wide receiver Joe Horn (hamstring) missed a third-straight day of practice. Petrino said Horn would be "questionable" for the game.

Leftwich Returns

Leftwich Returns

Quarterback Byron Leftwich returned to practice Wednesday -- another step in his recovery from ankle surgery.

Head Coach Bobby Petrino said the team has not decided on his availability for Sunday's game and that, for the moment, Joey Harrington remains in the No. 1 slot.

"I thought he looked pretty good," Petrino said. "He actually looked a little better than I thought he would... The thing you worry about is what's going to happen tonight and tomorrow morning -- how it reacts to all that work.

"I
