A Look Back at the "First Quarter"
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 2:49PM EST on January 8, 2008
The first four games of 2007 acted as a learning experience for Falcons players, coaches and staff.

How would Bobby Petrino's new offense interact with teams playing starters for four quarters and playing with more intense, non-preseason play books?

How would the Falcons defense do under new coordinator Mike Zimmer and how good can John Abraham really be when he's healthy through the first part of a season?

How would the team deal with two straight road trips to open a season?

It didn't take long to get some answers.

Defense? Solid. Abraham? Hard-hitting, exciting and -- at times -- dominant. Travel? Well, two straight losses.

An NFL season is too long to make snap judgments but, in hindsight, a 1-3 start with some rough outings could have been telling of what was to come in terms of wins and losses in 2007.

No one can disagree with the charge the team put together in December, however, which included a season-ending win after the abrupt resignation by Bobby Petrino as head coach.

None of that could be predicted in the first four games, which included bad days on offense (Minnesota and Jacksonville) and two solid days at quarterback by Joey Harrington in a seven-point loss (Carolina) and the season's first win (Houston).

You can click here for more on each game as I break down the season over on AF.com.

What we learned from the first four games is that the Falcons would be able to throw the football in 2007.

Roddy White started off what would be a record-breaking season and Harrington, though he wouldn't finish the season as the starter, had two of the best games in his career.

It gets lost over time, but the Falcons win over the Texans was one of the better all-around performances of the season. The team came back from a deficit, took the lead and held it as Houston and former Falcons backup quarterback Matt Schaub tried to chip away.

If you were at the Georgia Dome that day you got flashbacks to winning times.

An examination of the stats through the first four games of the season shows just how close the Falcons were to picking up one, two or even three more wins.

The Carolina and Jacksonville games were lost by a combined 13 points with two missed field goals spelling the difference against the Jaguars.

Two Minnesota touchdowns came on defense.

Atlanta also ranked in the top 15 in passing yards per game, opponents passing yards per game and opponents points per game through the first four games.

Turnover differential was perhaps the most discouraging number (minus-1), but even that stat turned as the season went on and the Falcons finished as one of the best teams in the NFC in that category.

I could go on forever analyzing stats from four months ago, so I'll just leave you with an AF.com highlight film from the first win of 2007.

Enjoy and feel free to comment with your memories from 2007.

Chasing History
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 3:12PM EST on December 4, 2007
It may seem hard to believe, but there hasn't been a Falcons receiver hasn't recorded 1,000 receiving yards in a season since Terance Mathis hit the mark in 1999 (1,016).

The Falcons haven't had two players hit the mark in the same season since 1998, when Tony Martin (1,181) and Mathis (1,136) in 1998.

I don't need to go into too much detail about the 1998 seasons.

Most Falcons fans can give a play-by-play of every game, the post season and Super Bowl XXXIII.

My how times changed.

That, of course, will become even more a piece of the past if Roddy White picks up just 80 more receiving yards. The third-year receiver set career highs in almost every category much earlier this season.

How he's just piling on and showing the NFL his performance can match up with his first-round pick status.

Here's a glimpse of that, by the way...
It's also not out of the question for White to record the most catches in a season since Mathis' 81 in 1999. No receiver has had more than 64 catches in a season since then. White already has 62 -- and 920 receiving yards.

Of course, it's not fair to place everything on the shoulders of the receivers. The Falcons ran a run-heavy offense for the first two years of Whites career.

Atlanta led the NFL in rushing yards last season, running the ball on 56.3 percent of its plays for more than 2,900 yards.

As a result, White and fellow veteran Michael Jenkins could sometimes count on one hand how many times the ball came their way.

Now the Falcons are throwing the ball more than 50 percent of the time and White has already surpassed career numbers for receiving yards.

"I'm happy," White said earlier in the season. "I get to go out there and catch eight or nine balls a game... A lot has changed around here and it's more pass oriented. It's kind of got me in the right direction and got my career going in the right direction.

"Ever since I got here I've been working hard and I'm going to continue to work hard and get better and, hopefully, set some career marks this year."

And, if all goes well, some Falcons' marks as well.

Now, just for the heck of it, a YouTube clip of Roddy White in college.

On the Ground and Thinking About the Air
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 2:32PM EST on December 1, 2007
One thing flew under the radar most of the week around Flowery Branch that I got to pondering as the team charter soared north to St. Louis.

We are now on the ground at the team hotel and I'm even more sure of my thoughts.

The Falcons defense is ranked eighth in the NFL allowing 202.3 yards per game through the sky.

You may be saying to yourself: "Of course, that's what DeAngelo Hall does."

I totally agree with you.

Hall is one of the best young, athletic cornerbacks in the game and his four interceptions have come at both key times and with high style marks.

It's more than one player however.

Think about this a moment.

The Baltimore Ravens, who have Pro Bowlers Ed Reed and Chris McAlister in their secondary, rank below the Falcons in passing yards allowed. As do the Denver Broncos, who line up with John Lynch, Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly.

Now you're probably thinking: "Well, teams have been running the ball a lot on the Falcons because they have the lead."

Again, I'd agree.

But a team's success isn't the only consideration.

Five teams that rank above the Falcons have winning records, including the undefeated New England Patriots.

This is something the Falcons defense has hung it's hat on. In fact, rookie corner Chris Houston said this week that the team has goals that include moving higher up the pass defense rankings over the final month of the regular season.

From the defensive line getting pressure, to the linebackers playing effective coverages to the corners and safeties playing the ball, this is a team effort.

It's something to keep an eye on tomorrow as Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt line up for the St. Louis Rams.
