Quick Thoughts from Day Three
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 2:43PM EST on January 23, 2008
Some random thoughts on the Senior Bowl and the morning practice from -- where else -- Panera Bread in Mobile, Ala.

Some cooler weather returned to Ladd-Peebles Stadium this morning as the North team took to the field again.

Now, with most of the offense installed, the team is working on perfecting it's play for Saturday's game against the South All-Stars.

Perhaps the biggest note from the morning is the improvement of quarterback Joe Flacco. Flacco was sharp on most of his passes and showed the live arm scouts have been talking about for most of the season.

Another player to watch this morning was Indiana cornerback Tracy Porter. The 5-foot-11 cornerback was in on several pass breakups and nearly had a couple interceptions in seven-on-seven drills.

He has been clocked at under 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash and finished the season with six picks.

We talked more about Porter and some other defensive backs in our AF.com podcast last night...

I also enjoyed watching USC tight end Fred Davis this morning in practice. When it comes to size, Davis reminds me a lot of Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler.

It's his strength that sets him apart though.

Davis looked great in one-on-one drills shedding receivers with his power and using a bit of speed to separate down the field...

We also caught up with Penn State linebacker Dan Conner for a brief interview. With James Laurinaitis deciding to remain at Ohio State, Conner's draft position figures to rise.

He has looked solid in practice, as has South Florida's Ben Moffitt...

Notre Dame safety Tom Zbikowski also caught my eye.

He's not the biggest player on the field but every hit he makes comes with perfect form. He reminds me of Pro Bowl safety John Lynch...

As for celebrities from the morning practice? Well, besides me, Matt Moore and Falcon Al I got glimpses of Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin chatting with Eagles head coach Andy Reid. I also saw Fox Sports reporter Jay Glazer.

More later on AF.com from Day Three of the Senior Bowl.

Questions and Answers
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 12:13PM EST on December 16, 2007
BLOGGER's NOTE: With the remaining games this season -- and at times throughout the year -- I'll be looking to answer some reader questions.

For round one, simply leave your question about the Falcons or the Buccaneers as a comment. I'll answer a few in the press box before kickoff of Sunday's game.

These questions can range from what's happening on the field to anything you wanted to know from behind the scenes (within reason, of course).

Thanks for the questions... Here are some answers as we get ready for the Falcons-Bucs game.

I got a message from RB21 with two questions.

1. I was wondering what you thought of the way players responded to (Bobby) Petrino leaving the team?

What you see on television is pretty accurate. The attitude in the locker room became very up beat after Petrino left and some of the stories started to come out about some of the frustrations from his term as coach. I didn't expect such a burst of positive energy only because I think we all didn't realize exactly how deep some of these problems went. I think it's the best thing to happen to this team moving forward. Sure, the draft gets a little complicated now since a new coach will be coming on board. But, everyone is happy and smiling again. You have to love that.

2. As soon as the game is over how fast do you guys leave that game site? Do you guys get into Atlanta that same day or stay over that night?

The team returns to the Atlanta immediately after the game. They only game I'm aware of where teams do not do this is the Super Bowl (too much partying and preparation). Even when the team played in Tokyo in the preseason, it returned after the game. Buses normally leave the stadium around an hour after the game, then it's straight to the airport. So, most of the coverage you see continuing on AF.com is done on a moving bus with Verizon broadband access.

An anonymous poster asks...

Why does Norwood not get more carries?

That's a question many fans on the message boards have asked throughout the season. Coaches are the only ones that can give the real answer, however, there are a few points I can make.

For starters, Jerious himself would tell you he can always get better with his blocking. To be a running back in the NFL is to be a great runner and perhaps an even better blocker. If you can't pick up the blitz every time, it's tough to get on the field. That said, Jerious figures to get more chances as the season draws to a close like many younger players will.

My coworker Matt Moore asks...

I think Jermaine Phillips is one of the hardest hitters in the NFL. Do you agree? And who are some the other guys that you believe are the hardest hitters?

I agree with you. The strong safety the Falcons face today in Tampa is one of the hardest hitters in the entire league. That's a trademark of this "Tampa Two" defense (basically a zone defense where safeties and corners are almost always in zone coverage).

John Lynch is one of the hardest hitters I've ever seen, even as he ages. I'll never forget a hit he laid on Tennessee Titans tight end Frank Wycheck in 2003. The resulting concussion basically ended Wycheck's career. On a personal note, you won't find a harder worker and greater man than Lynch in the league.

I'm also a fan of Bob Sanders.

Tony Dungy took the original Tampa Two with him to Indy and Sanders is filling in where Lynch roamed the sidelines in Tampa.

On the Ground and Thinking About the Air
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 2:32PM EST on December 1, 2007
One thing flew under the radar most of the week around Flowery Branch that I got to pondering as the team charter soared north to St. Louis.

We are now on the ground at the team hotel and I'm even more sure of my thoughts.

The Falcons defense is ranked eighth in the NFL allowing 202.3 yards per game through the sky.

You may be saying to yourself: "Of course, that's what DeAngelo Hall does."

I totally agree with you.

Hall is one of the best young, athletic cornerbacks in the game and his four interceptions have come at both key times and with high style marks.

It's more than one player however.

Think about this a moment.

The Baltimore Ravens, who have Pro Bowlers Ed Reed and Chris McAlister in their secondary, rank below the Falcons in passing yards allowed. As do the Denver Broncos, who line up with John Lynch, Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly.

Now you're probably thinking: "Well, teams have been running the ball a lot on the Falcons because they have the lead."

Again, I'd agree.

But a team's success isn't the only consideration.

Five teams that rank above the Falcons have winning records, including the undefeated New England Patriots.

This is something the Falcons defense has hung it's hat on. In fact, rookie corner Chris Houston said this week that the team has goals that include moving higher up the pass defense rankings over the final month of the regular season.

From the defensive line getting pressure, to the linebackers playing effective coverages to the corners and safeties playing the ball, this is a team effort.

It's something to keep an eye on tomorrow as Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt line up for the St. Louis Rams.
