A behind-the-scenes look at anything and everything Falcons and a touch of insight on the NFL. As a bonus, some thoughts on life from North Georgia.

Thoughts (and Video) from a Day on the Lake
Posted by: J. Michael Moore at 10:07AM EST on June 12, 2008
Yesterday more than a dozen Falcons players went fishing with combat-wounded veterans from around the Southeast.

These Purple Heart recipients spent close to three hours on Lake Lanier fishing for striper with Falcons stars.

Many Falcons players grew up with a fishing pole in their hand, including starting center Todd McClure. But Wednesday marked something different -- from fishing for the elusive striper to spending time with honored guardians of the country.

"We talked football and they talked about Iraq and what they went through," McClure said. "It's humbling to hear how close to death they were at times. You may watch TV and hear about the war but you don't get to hear the stories up close about what these guys went through. It's very humbling."

Falcons community staffers Chris Millman and Colt Berry organized the event. The Dam Store provided bait, tackle and other supplies and the fishermen were greeted at the end of the day with steaks from Outback Steakhouse. Members of the Lanier Striper Club volunteered their boats, time, skills and fuel for the event.

Staff Sgt. Calvin Wilson, an M1A1 tank commander, was inured by a roadside bomb just more than a year ago outside Ramadi.

He entered the Army after high school but said he always wanted to take a shot at the NFL.

"I met my dream today," he said. "To me, it feels like I'm in the NFL for a day."

MORE FROM THE LAKE

Look for more coverage today on AtlantaFalcons.com, but here's a little something to back the fish tales that are currently being told in the locker room. (Click here for photos).

Tackle Tyson Clabo brings in a fish near Flat Creek.
Not every boat had a scale, but Clabo and McClure claim the right tackle led the way with a 13-pounder.

McClure gets in on the action.
Don't worry folks, no one fell off the boat and that loud clank you hear didn't cause any visible damage.

Wilson gets a souvenir.
Fishing with Tim Anderson, Doug Datish and Kevin Lovell, Calvin Wilson also got plenty of pictures to remember his "dream" day.

Redman takes two. He may have brought in more, but this is the second fish I witnessed the Falcons quarterback catch.

Helping Hands
Posted by: J. Michael Moore at 4:29PM EST on May 11, 2008

BLOGGER'S NOTE: Stay with AtlantaFalcons.com for coverage from mini camp including photos from practice and video interviews.

Veteran center Todd McClure is generous with his time and his knowledge (just look at his involvement in our college football pet project last season).

This week he and the team's other veterans turn their attention to helping out the rookies.

But that doesn't mean they're not looking for something in return.

"It's going pretty good," McClure said. "They're trying to learn a new offense; we've been studying for a month. Everything is happening so fast for them and we've all been there at one point in time. But we've got extra guys now to carry our helmets in and get us Gatorade, so it's nice."

McClure, a seventh-round draft pick, has talked before about the devotion it takes to make an impact with older players. Some may call it hazing, others call it a rite of passage.

Rookie Sam Baker helps haul the o-line's head gear after every practice, even with his status as a three-time All-American at USC.

But while players may be quick to yell 'Hey Rookie!" before ordering another beverage, they're just as quick to offer advice.

Dedication to teammates and improvement starts early, especially with 18 rookies on the roster that figure to fight for playing time at most every position.

"You can just help them out because you see them out there with their head spinning," McClure said. "Let them know you're approachable... Some guys like to ride them pretty hard, I try to stay away from that, especially with the guys we're going to be counting on to play this year."

Pre-Camp Meditations
Posted by: J. Michael Moore at 2:08PM EST on May 8, 2008

BLOGGER'S NOTE: Stay with AtlantaFalcons.com through the weekend for mini camp coverage including stories, photos and interviews.

Falcons players report to team headquarters tomorrow to start the next round of mini camp activities.

Practice fields lie in wait.

Saturday morning the Falcons -- rookie and veteran -- will take the field for the first time in 2008. The public is invited to four practices over the weekend for this first (and only) look at the Birds before the start of Training Camp.

And, so far, the anticipation has been personified with an eerie, business-like ease. If not for the tackling dummies and weight room I'd feel like a CPA at Flowery Branch's largest accounting firm.

But one glance at the practice fields brings us all back to reality.

We had a taste of the season at last month's veteran mini camp. Now it's all about the future as rookies and vets take the field together.

Matt Ryan, Sam Baker, Chevis Jackson...

Chris Redman, Todd McClure, Chris Houston...

Erik Coleman, Michael Turner, Ben Hartsock...

We're ready for our first peak.

It's tough to know what kind of "football previews" fans and reporters can draw from mini camp. Players are in shorts and running between the tackles just doesn't have that same "pop."

But something about helmets, whistles and play books brings the fall into focus and, when a receiver stretches his hands to the air to make that catch over a cornerback, it's easy to forget the pollen in the air and lack of on-the-field contact.

The Falcons first preseason game is less than 100 days away. Practices this weekend may not resemble a game but everything about mini camp is designed to bring winning in 2008.

If you make the trip to The Branch this weekend, look for Head Coach Mike Smith's upbeat, energetic style to explode into the spring sky.

(Trust me, you may leave practice ready to run through a brick wall for the man).

Look for the team to start perfecting the playbook and look for some players getting some reps at various positions.

(The coaching staff has made cross-training a priority).

Look for rookies to get more accustom to NFL life by the minute. They may wobble like foals on the first few snaps, but will make some plays with one of the rawest powers in football -- potential.

It's mini camp time again in Flowery Branch.

Just look at the field.

Connections
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 7:30PM EST on December 26, 2007
It doesn't take a lifelong, well-versed Falcons fan to realize the amount of connections in this weekend's game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Still, I'll mention the big ones.

  1. Former head coach Jim Mora is the Seahawks secondary coach.
  2. Former defensive end Patrick Kerney leads Seattle in sacks.
  3. Seahawks president Tim Ruskell was once with the Falcons.
  4. Jonathan and Jordan Babineaux? Yeah. They're brothers.
This is probably as well-connected a series as you'll find in the NFL this season, mostly because it touches on all areas of the game. The relationships also have tremendous depth.

Don't think it makes much of a difference on how the game will be played, however.

I've attended close to 100 games in my life -- both as a fan and employee. I always make it a point to look at the "connections" section of the game program or media information packet before or during.

There's always some sort of relationship shared among players and coaches of NFL teams.

Goes to show you how tight the NFL family really is.

The thing that's refreshing about this is how -- for the most part -- everyone wants former teammates and friends to do well.

Take Kerney for example, who has the NFL sack lead less than a year after playing for the Birds.

"He's always been a guy that's given it everything he’s got," Falcons center Todd McClure said Wednesday. "It’s good to see guys you came in with and that you played with having success, so I'm glad for him -- just as long as he doesn’t have (success) this week."

McClure, of course, smiled when he made those final comments.

Fans at the Georgia Dome will probably react in a number of ways when the Seahawks take the field.

But, when it comes to the guys on the field, they're most always wishing each other well.

Out of Control
Posted by: jmike811_DEP at 4:49PM EST on November 30, 2007
Hopefully you've all enjoyed the " College Football Fiesta " on AtlantaFalcons.com .

Now I think it's time you get a little insight on how Matt Moore , "Falcon Al" Daniel and I go about getting these selections together on a weekly basis.

Ever hear of "creating a monster?"

It all started way back at the beginning of the season around a conference room table.

Hey! Let's do college picks each week! We can get head shots of guys, us and a cheerleader (maybe Freddie Falcon, too) and we'll all pick college games! It will be great!

OK, maybe we weren't that excited. But an idea was born and you have to respect that.

It started off simple -- Todd McClure, DeAngelo Hall, Michael Jenkins and Ovie Mughelli. We'd get their thoughts on each week's game and I'd load it into the site.

Now you get your first lesson in an NFL locker room -- not a lot of privacy.

Week 1...

It was like the first day back to school after Christmas break and we had the newest, coolest toy in the entire fifth grade.

Joe Horn led the charge.

Can I get in on that?

Sure, Joe!

Roddy, you want to play?

How about...

And so it began.

Getting picks now is a cross between lion taming and balancing a check book. Just take a look at what Al created to keep up with everyone's status (because what's a game if you can't brag about your success).

Since more people wanted to jump on board after the start date, we needed to shift to winning percentage to give guys an idea of how they've done week to week.

SAMPLE PICK SHEET:

The three of us now have to take the sheets into the locker room (on a time schedule) and get game selections between bouts of trash talking and college stories.

When that's done, we can do the easy part -- building the page.

I hope you get an idea of how complicated this can be.

You may have read Matt's blog recently about how Horn reached us via phone to get his selections in.

Devotion.

I'm not complaining.

Actually, I'm ranting mostly at how successful this little game has become at getting laughs in the locker room and a little rivalry going, especially between Matt and Cheerleader Nicole Mo , who has a slim, two-game lead as we enter the final week.

So, there you have it.

How football becomes accounting and accounting becomes, well, even less fun.

I never thought I'd be so glad to see college football season end.
