Didn't the final drive begin on the Jags 40?
No, but I was blending the final two drives together. Joey came in with 6 minutes left and promptly hit Weems on the rollout pass. That drive started on our 25 yard line. He had us down to their 33 in two plays. Then, we had a failed running play, the play action scramble where he did his Inmate #7 impersonation, the false start and the pass that hit Weems in the hands.
We missed the field goal then got the ball back with 3:14 left and us at our 20 (not their 40). Brown and Snelling had matching 10 yard runs, then Shockley completed the seven yard out to Weems that was nullified by the offsides penalty. On 1st and 5, Shockley hit Zinger in the hands and he whiffed badly. On 2nd and five, Shockey avoided a sack on a blitz with a quick release out of the shotun that fell harmlessly incomplete. On 3rd and five, he hit Jennings for 10 yards.
Then, we had a false start on #65. On 1st and 15, Shockley avoided a sack with a scramble and should have run with the ball. Instead, he threw off balance downfield, a poor decision that was easily deflected away by a defender. That was one of his two bad plays in the game. On 2nd and 15, he threw a beautiful pass to Chandler Williams. "That was the best throw of the night, I think, by any quarterback," was the call on that one, and I agree. That 27 yard play put us down to the 21 yard line and in position to tie/win the game.
On 1st and 10, our protection failed completely, but Shockley scrambled away to semiavoid the sack. He didn't have time to throw the ball away, as I would preferred and wound up losing a yard on the play, which I think did go down as a sack. Since he was the shotgun, he saved us five yards with his awareness, though. On 2nd and 11, he made the play that should have won the game with 43 seconds left. He threw to Chandler Williams and "dropped that ball right out of the sky. I don't know if you can throw the ball any better than that." Williams could not make the catch. On 3rd and 11 with 40 seconds left, Shockley had his jersey grabbed right before he threw and may have held on to the ball a bit too long in waiting for a receiver to come open. He released it right after 3 Mississippi. We would like to have better protection than that, but he needs to adapt better when we don't.
On 4th and 11, Shockley should have been sacked to end the game. He somehow avoided a certain tackle and scrambled all the way down to the 6 yard line.On 1st and goal, he threw a ball Weems should have caught at the 1 yard line. On 2nd and goal, there was a jail break by the Jags front seven, so Shockley threw the ball into the stands (sidenote: I still hate Byron Leftwich) to avoid the sack. On 3rd and goal, he made the huge mistake of trying to throw the ball as #51 (or #57?) was grabbing him. "It was a great effort, a great effort by Shockley to get the team down there," was the comment from the announcer after this interception.
And he apparently played terribly the entire time he was doing this, which...surprises me. These are the plays I saw that involved DJ Shockley. I cordially invited people who actually watched the game and want to talk about Falcons football in a fair-handed manner to discuss them with me.
Those of you who are firmly ensconced in the "Shockley RULEZ!" and "Shockley SUCKZ!" camps, on the other hand, can go back to your regularly scheduling ranting.
