And here is the reason why:

If we have learned anything about our starting quarterback in the almost season and a half that we have had him it is that he is his own worst critic. Oh, he won't hear or read any of the moronic posts from the waterheads on this message board, but some of the garbage from sportswriters in town like Mark Bradley or critiques from someone like that brain dead idiot "sportscaster" Gil Tyree at the CBS affiliate in Atlanta might find their way to Ryan.

And what will he do?

Will he announce at a press conference after a particularly good game "I am a quarterback." No.

Will he start referring to himself in the third person, you know "everyone loves Matt Ryan?" No.

How about getting a tattoo of a superhero's logo on his arm and start referring to himself as that superhero? I mean, Superman is already taken....Maybe Batman, since it's close to Matt? Mattman? No, I can't see him doing that either.

Announce or admit during a national television interview that he quit in some games and didn't work very hard to improve as a quarterback? **** no.

He will work harder to become better. He will spend more time in the weight room. He will spend more time with his OC. He will break down more film. He will put in the extra time with his receiving corps to get the timing between the two razor sharp.

So keep on dumping on this kid who just started his 24th game as an NFL starter last night. Just like the sand that is an irritant in the oyster you are helping to turn this kid into a polished pearl.......... ;)

Thanks falconsgal.....I appreciate it.

I just don't understand how these people could completely misread who this kid is and what he's all about. He hasn't even begun to reach where his eventual ceiling might be.

I don't get it either, honestly! He has been referred to as the next Peyton Manning and I have to agree. He is a great leader on and off the field and has incredible work ethic. I, for one, am glad to have him as our QB!! Go Ryan! Prove the doubters and haters wrong. I hope he laughs his a** all the way to the Hall Of Fame one day!

His picks werent that bad and I dont think he played all that poorly truth be told. He certainly wasnt elite like we've come to expect but break the picks down.

The first was a bad read, but then it still should have been an illegal contact penalty.

The second one was a tipped pass and the last a hail mary.

People are going to jump on Ryans back every time he makes any mistake, well guess what, all QBs make mistake. We lost a close game and as a team played real well, I'm encouraged by what I saw against a very good Saints team.

See this is where you guys are doing this kid no favors.. Do you realize how great Peyton Manning is? Why don't we just let Matt make his own lane as a good QB? You say someone is the next Michael Jordan or Peyton Manning and when he ends up being just "good" people start to look at him as a failure.Becuase greatness is a lot more rare than people think it is..I would be happy if Matt was the next Matt Hasselback at this point...Stop buying into the hype and just enjoy watching him mature..

So any negative criticism equals praise or longing for Mike Vick? Are we supposed to just praise him when he has a good game and have a gag order when he has a bad one?

iS THAT what true fan is supposed to do? Is he beyond reproach?

So any negative criticism equals praise or longing for Mike Vick?.....No, but it's totally legitimate to compare the two since Vick was the last (non-rotating) starting quarterback for the Falcons........AND......most of the outlandish criticism of Ryan comes from the same usual suspects....the ones who can't seem to grasp that Vick is gone and isn't coming back.

Are we supposed to just praise him when he has a good game and have a gag order when he has a bad one? Personally I don't care what anyone says or does regarding criticism of Ryan......The whole premise of my thread was and is that no critic of Ryan (either thoughtful, insightful football-based ones or over-emotional knee-jerk ones who have a not-so-hidden agenda) are going to be as hard on him as he is on himself.

iS THAT what true fan is supposed to do? Is he beyond reproach? Of course he isn't. He's performing in an occupation that is inviting public scrutiny every week during the season. How qualified are you or I to actually judge and/or monitor his progress? How many teams have you coached? Have you ever been a general manager or a scout for a professional or college football team?

My whole point in this thread is that so many of the people who seem to take shots at Ryan don't even begin to have an inkling of what makes this guy tick....and I find that humorous, telling and sad at the same time.

Ryan deserves criticism like anyone in the NFL does for bad play. The thing that really gets under my skin is that people completely forget he was a rookie thrown into the starting role last season from the get go. Do you know how many QB's have been successful with that? **** Peyton Manning threw 28 INT's in his rookie season. 28!!! People need to remember Ryan has only played 1.5 NFL seasons and there are going to be growing pains. He is going to make bad throws, he is going to make mistakes, and he is going to learn from them. Expectations for him to be some MVP Pro Bowl type QB who isn't going to make mistakes in only his 2nd season in the NFL is ridiculous and unfair to Ryan in general.

Great post Masked Falcon and great post by Wolfpack as well. Why can't people realize we got something special in Matt Ryan. So many people are ready to crucify him if he makes a mistake. Every QB is gonna have some bad games, even bad seasons. If some of you really expect this team, organization, and every single player to be perfect every minute they're on the field I have bad news for you all, IT'S NEVER GONNA HAPPEN. Not just in Atlanta, but throughout every organization in every league of every sport. Sorry to break it to ya.

I absolutely know how great Peyton is. I also know that he had a very bumpy career start. I did not call him this. I just agree with the fact that he is a good leader and hard worker like Manning. He is who he is and will be good no matter who he may or may not be compared to. He will be better than good because of his work ethic and criticism of himself. That shows me a lot. Sorry if you misunderstood what I was saying. I will enjoy him as I already have no matter what. I don't buy into hype. The proof is in what I see. That is a new QB who, IMHO, will be great.

Another great post. Why can't everybody on these boards see Ryan the way some of us do. I truly believe in a few years (maybe even before that) everyone will see how talented of a football player he is.

ALL of the greats struggled early on and some even later on. Joe Montana, even in his prime, had some horrible games, as did Joe Namath. We've all seen Bret Favre stink the place up from time to time, but does anyone think he's not going to the HOF?

It's not a perfect world and nobody is perfect in it.

Even Matt Ryan.;)

WHEN I SEE UNWARRANTED CRITICISM OF RYAN (here in taft), I SEE 3 THINGS

1. A BANDWAGONEER

2. AN ILLITERATE FOOTBALL FAN

3. A ROOKIE TROLL

AND YOU'LL FIND A GREAT AMOUNT OF ALL THREE HERE. B)

Well because I watch the game with my eyes not with my heart. He was very good as a rookie last year..So far this year he has regressed, which shouldn't happen with more weapons and more experience... It just seems like he was more effective when he was flying under the radar. As soons as the media hype and adoration stepped up, his level of play fell off. Maybe it's because defenses has film on him.. Maybe it's because people wanna knock the new kid on the block that everyone loves down.. Either way he hasn't responded well to pressure this year.

I think its maybe because it seems as if his level of play fell off and peoples' high expectations did not due to all of the media hype and adoration.

We all knew Matt would have some bad games, like all QBs in the NFL, but some of you act like its a permanent thing.

That's what's off track about so many of these posts criticizing Ryan. Many of these posters don't seem to grasp the complexities of professional football, how the individual and team match-ups change week to week....

Case in point: Monday night Will Smith was beating Sam Baker all night long like Baker owed Smith money. Left tackle is a right-handed quarterback's blind side protector. I haven't seen one single post on this MB since Monday night dissecting Baker's play. It's easier to rag on Ryan, the higher profile player then it is to actually watch the game or break down the film afterwards and see that all of the disparate parts have to work together for any individual player to be successful.

Baker having a bad night more times than not means that Ryan is going to have a bad night.
