Ealey: Spikes shouldn't be suspended

Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia running back Washaun Ealey says he doesn't think Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes should be suspended for apparently trying to gouge Ealey's eyes in Saturday's game.

Florida coach Urban Meyer on Monday suspended Spikes for the first half of this week's game against Vanderbilt after the defensive captain stuck his hand in Ealey's helmet and appeared to try to stick in fingers in Ealey's eyes.

Ealey says he doesn't agree with those who have said the suspension was not stiff enough. He said on Tuesday that Spikes "shouldn't, I think, get suspended at all."

Top-ranked Florida beat Georgia 41-17. On Monday, Spikes issued an apology, saying there "is no excuse for my actions."

that just goes to show how great of a guy that ealey is. he is able to forgive such a flagrant eye gouging by spikes and not wish anymore ill will on brandon. his facebook entry was funny on sunday night when he posted that he was okay he still had his eye sight.

This type of thing happens all the time on the bottom of piles. Spikes just happen to get caught on camera. I've had my eye gouged and contact lens ripped out during a high school game after I was tackled.

he's right. Most of the time the camera is on a coach not on the bottom of a pile.

There are instances where the offended party deserves to have some say in the actions taken against the offender.

THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE CASES, IMO.

Making excuses and saying the above doesn't take away from what happened. You can't excuse away with the "this happens all the time" defense because it's no defense at all. We have seen ex college/nfl players who say otherwise and who have called it out for what it is one of the worst things you can do by eye gouging a player trying to blind them which is what happened. He didn't just get caught, he actually did it and it's classless and thuggish actions period.

Wetzel's comment on the above attempt to defend spikes actions is dead on:

"Football is an emotional, violent pursuit and acts like this happen more than the camera catches. “I don’t think that we did anything in that game that they didn’t do,” quarterback Tim Tebow told reporters.

That’s the excuse of a child though. The other-guy-does-it-too is never a justifiable defense. It wouldn’t even matter if Ealey had provoked him (the two had been jawing prior to the incident).

Spikes is the one who got caught."

LOL! Golic stated this morning that some Orlando newspaper is going after him because he believes that the punishment set down by Meyer is a joke (in which it is.)

I'm not making excuses. What Spikes done was definitely wrong. No denying that. I'm just simply stating that this type of behavior happens alot during games and Spikes got caught.

Hey Cap you need to tell Mr/ So called good Christan Tebow that what Ealey is saying is what
a good Christian what's to be. And not to defend a nasty player like he did.
He is right about one thing they happen more then the camera catches and being a player on Fla he would know since they are all nasty dirty players.

I wouldn't say we're all nasty dirty players, we're just Champions.

I really don't think a case of sour grapes applies to this one.
