I don't understand how people can hate racists, yet use a racist moniker to describe them.

It's like saying this: "I hate racist crackers."

Where i live, redneck is a word of pride among many. You can choose to or to not act "redneck." A person cannot choose their race. Not every white male from the south is a redneck.

I'm from south Mississippi. Both my parents grew up on farms. They both worked hard, went to college and got teaching degrees. My father has his masters in education. Our immediate family isn't "redneck." Several of my cousins are as redneck as possible. They choose that lifestyle. Its not the same as race.

No, you assumed racist statements were made by "rednecks." You produced that label, not even knowing the actual race of posters in which you are referring.

I've never joked about the hurricane or used it to insult the Saints out of jealousy or bitterness or anything, but I will say that I'm tired of hearing about it. Every Saints game I've watched this season I hear the announcers talking like Katrina has unified this team into playing the way they are...newsflash, it was 4 years ago. Why must they still try to make it sound like a touching story that the Saints are playing so well? They're playing great because they're a great team. If the Bears had a really good season maybe they should attribute it to the Chicago fire.

And I really hope you don't think I sound insensitive here. I definitely have compassion for the great city of New Orleans and all that its people have been through, I just think it's time to stop talking about it so much.

When the association is made between the team and city's problems, associations will be made about the team and other teams, especially in the division. "The Saints have revitalized this city." I'm not sure I condone it but thats why...As a Falcon fan for life I dont want to hear the Saints doing anything good....

You have to keep things in perspective. Only a small number of classless scumbags make jokes about events like Katrina. They are a mindless minority, and do not represent the rest of the fans base. Sadly, every team in the NFL has a number of stupid fans who behave like idiots. We had saints fans on here only last week doing the same thing.

The vast majority of fans here were appalled by the tragedy, and I distinctly remember a number of threads about making donations to the disater appeal and even threads from fans offering assistance to people affected.

You talk about "hating " the Falcons, but if I remember correctly, the Falcons were also amongst the most active organisations in the NFL in supporting the appeal and offering assistance (possibly THE most active team, outside of the Saints) and Warrick Dunn in particular was one of the 'ring leaders' in encouraging other NFL players to donate.

If a person chooses to make racist statements, then i feel comfortable calling them "rednecks". This is the deep south, while there are plenty or racist people all over this country and world many of which you couldn't label redneck, if you are down here, and you're racist, then "redneck" is a kinder word than i want to use.

Several of you seem to want to be argumentative, especially over semantics. It that is how you want to spend you time, fine by me, but i'm don't want to spend all my time on the Falcons board defending my statements when i wasn't over here to argue.

We've got a surging Panthers team that has beat us 5 out of the last 6 times they have played us. I'll move on now. For those who responded to this thread both positively and negatively, thanks for your input. Again, hope you have a good and injury free season, and good luck every game this season but one. (or two if we see each other in the playoffs as well.)

Last thing, since this was posted while i was typing. I stated my reasons for "hating" the falcons in my original post, i don't hate any of you or the actual players of your team. I don't hate Atlanta, having been there multiple times and also being a Braves fan. Mine is a football hate, which is normal and expected for division rivals with our history.

The donations and kindness that was provided by many around the country, Atlanta included, was wonderful, and while most of it did go to New Orleans, (which if you read my original post i'm not from)some trickled into MS also. I teach at a middle school and we got a few donations of clothes for some of our kids that lost their homes.

Anyway, i will say one more time:
1. I hate Falcons from a purely Saints/Falcons rivalry perspective.
2. I don't hate the city of Atlanta or Falcons fans in general
3. If you are from the south and make racist comments, you deserve to be called worse than "redneck" but i'll leave it there.
4. I hope you have a good season
5. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas.
6. I'm out. May or may not be back when we play again. Its time to go (hopefully) beat the Panthers.

because stupidity and ignorance are every where, this includes some people in all fan bases. unfortunately the same vehicle that allows us fans to share our opinions and views is also the same vehicle that allows those in those 2 categories to have the same chance. the down side of freedom of speech......stupidity rarely keeps quiet.

Well it is just totally classless and disgusting to post stuff about Katrina in a hateful way. I don't understand it myself. But I am 54 years old, and in general there seems to be way more hatred in the world these days. You see it displayed in sports and in politics quite a bit. There just seems to be a general decline in civility towards each other in the world.

The NFL is just a game. We all want our team to win, but we can at least keep our emotions from becoming pure hatred towards one another.

I've been known to sling some pretty rough insults in particular to Saints fans, but I won't bring up Katrina. That's one barrier, even I won't cross.
