This guy is awesome

B)

My neighbor wanted to learn guitar so I went over to his house to show him some stuff. Then I saw he had an "Esteban" guitar. I tried not to laugh at him... ;)

Satriani and Van Halen both have freakishly technical/good chops.

I love Slash's recordings but saw a couple of live performances on TV and he was sloppy as heck. I think Jimmy Page has the same issue...

Both make magic in the studio but are apparently too ripped to do it (cleanly) live :-)

Are we talking physical ability and clean? I'd put Steve Vai to cut heads with pretty much anyone. Jimi Hendrix? lol.

That's the thing. You would have to put a very niche category to claim that someone is the best at it. Steve Vai is the best at what he does. Jimi was the best at what he did. (and what are you lol'ing about?)

Best in what way?

We'll you can see in my avatar who I think is the best, but I agree in what way? Guitarists are not like race horses, they are great in a lot of ways. I love Rhoades, Eddie Van Halen, to David Gilmour, to even Jerry Garcia. Its just what style they play in. ;)

Cuz I started thinking about how sloppy a player Hendrix is. Star spangled banner for example. So what exactly made Hendrix to be great anyway...still haven't figured that one out.

You probably haven't heard Hendrix under the right umm err circumstances...

He did get sloppy at times because he was often wasted beyond belief when playing but at the same time he WHALED the blues in the most hard core and intense way I have ever heard. There was an energy and intensity in his playing that is absolutely amazing.

As for the Star Spangled Banner. The sounds he was making were not traditional guitar/music sounds. He's making the guitar scream, maching guns going off, bombs bursting, helicopters whirling. It was an incredible and insane performance and if you ever heard it under the right umm err circumstances you would feel like you were in a war zone. Here's one of my personal fav Hendrix live performances:

To summarize I guess you could say that, like beer, Hendrix is an acquired taste. But once you understand it it's an amazing new world for music and guitar both.

As a guitar player of 20 years, I can easily say that Hendrix was one of my top guitar influences. I think a lot of players would say the same.

That vid was pretty good, but I hear that kind of play all the time here in the smokey bars in NOLA.

Ability like Vai definitely is not something I hear everyday and stands apart IMO. As far as bluesy rock guitar and song writing ability- Jerry Cantrell. Just my opinion though.

And the reason you hear that all the time in NOLA is because this guy did it 40 years ago and influenced those guys. I can guarantee you wouldn't have heard anything like this in NOLA 40 years ago ;)

Vai is a technical beast and I can barely do half of the technical things that he does. It's fun to watch. However, I just (personally) enjoy listening to Hendrix more because its more about the 'feel' and the music and less about the 'look what I can do' stuff. Yes I know Vai has feel too but it's just so...choreographed. Hard to explain... Vai is great no doubt.

Cantrell is very good too. Although I must admit I haven't listened to his stuff as much.

I don't like Steve Vai's song writing, just his technical ability is amazing. When I read the title of the thread, I instantly thought the best as in 'technical ability.' -as in who would cut heads the best.
