While I don't feel art is really any sort of competition and there's no "best," I will agree with names that should be mentioned among the greats.

Jimi, Jimmy.... the names people mentioned so far.

One person who is worth mentioning as a great guitarist with a little different take on the instrument is Michael Hedges. His playing had, at once, a serenity and intensity. Great atmospheric music. It's a shame he died at a relatively young age.

The first one is him playing his "harp guitar." Check him out if you haven't before. This goes doubly if you want to see someone with a unique approach to the acoustic guitar.

I've never been a fan of overly wankery technical, "clean" playing guitarists, so guys like Satrianni, EVH and Vai just don't do anything for me. I like rock music, and in my opinion, rock should be soulfull and raw. It seems a lot of what other people think of as sloppy playing is what I consider rawness, and to me that is essential for rock music. I think technical proficiency is great for classical music, but not something I often find appealing in rock.

I like when a good guitarist isn't overshadowing the band. Hendrix and Page not only had chops and stage pressence, but also had songs. All those wankery types overshadow their bands, because they are all about tricks and not about music.

Not a shredder, so no one is interested.

It's sad how many truly great guitarists are out there that don't get counted because they don't play a self-indulgent style of music.

I like that self-indulgent music, mind you, but the point is the ones screaming for attention end up being the only ones getting any.

That vid was pretty good, but I hear that kind of play all the time here in the smokey bars in NOLA.

So because a ton of musicians with 40 years to analyze him rip Hendrix off, Hendrix was average and sucks?

Stevie Ray Vaughan nailed Hendrix's tone. You'd never have heard Stevie Ray say Hendrix sucked because Stevie could lift his licks. What makes Hendrix great is that you would never have ANYONE playing half the stuff out there now if he hadn't been there first.

And Hendrix was basically copping Buddy Guy, so there's another whole layer there to peel away.

True, true.

I don't like Steve Vai's song writing, just his technical ability is amazing. When I read the title of the thread, I instantly thought the best as in 'technical ability.' -as in who would cut heads the best.

You've watched Crossroads one time too many :P

That's why I said there cannot be just one. I doubt Steve Vai could play any of Stanley Jordan's stuff. So in terms of technical playing, there are a ton of people out there, and they aren't really any better or worse, they're just different. If you don't like Jazz standards being played hyper-technically, you'll hate Jordan. If you DO like Jazz standards, but think a beautiful woman with a smoky voice ought to be singing them, you'll hate Jordan.

It's all taste and preference. "Best" is a highly relative term when we cannot even define what "best" means.

I'd vote for Jordan in the head-cutting contest with Vai. Doesn't mean Jordan's better than Vai -- I just happen to like him better.

I haven't heard Jordan's version of Stairway to Heaven in a long time and I have never seen it on vid. Very, very impressive. I don't like jazz at all but when he does a rock piece he is pretty awesome.

That's why I put it on there after "Autumn Leaves." I knew if I left it with a jazz standard it would get less interest.

I can't judge anybody to be the best, but my favorite is Jerry Douglas (although I can say he's not the most talented I've heard.). He plays the resonator guitar.

Stanley Jordan:

The number of guys that can replicate his style that I've heard of I can count on one hand. His style is like a whole different instrument. Not only that but his guitars are custom designed to accommodate his 'tapping' style. That just adds to the impossibility of trying to replicate it. Jordan was a classically trained pianist before playing guitar and he took that piano style to guitar. He plays the guitar like a piano or harpsichord. I bought an instructional video of his many years ago but its so friggin hard. It's like trying to learn violin or something. It's a totally different beast. Much respect to Stanley Jordan...

Ability like Vai definitely is not something I hear everyday and stands apart IMO. As far as bluesy rock guitar and song writing ability- Jerry Cantrell. Just my opinion though.

Honestly, I hear a lot more shredders these days than those that try to pull off Hendrix.

Shredding stopped being "mainstream" in the early 90s.

Well Hendrix isn't exactly mainstream anymore, either.

Hendrix is a timeless legend. Whether or not someone shreds, he can still be a major influence on them. Heck, he's the reason Malmsteen of all people got into music.
